Mentors Needed!

The Say Yes Scholar Mentoring Program matches Say Yes Buffalo Scholars attending one of ten local Say Yes partner postsecondary schools with a local professional to help guide them through the transition from high school to college.

Mentor Role & Responsibilities

 

Say Yes Mentors are asked to:

  • Assist students in their transition from high school to post-secondary education
  • Help scholars set goals and encourage achievement of those goals
  • Build a relationship with mentee by planning and participating in activities
  • Provide advice, guidance, and support as needed
  • Serve as a positive role model
  • Complete and submit monthly reports

Time Commitment

To be a Say Yes Mentor we ask volunteers to commit to a relationship with one of our students for a period of 18-months or through that student’s first year of post-secondary education.

During this time, mentors are expected to make at minimum four monthly contacts with their mentee in which at least two should be scheduled face-to-face meetings lasting at least an hour.  Other contacts can be via phone, text, email, Skype, Face Time, etc.

In addition to regularly communicating with your mentee, all mentors are required to attend:

  • An initial orientation meeting
  • Two training sessions annually
  • At least two scheduled Say Yes Scholar Mentor Program events annually

You will also be invited to attend optional mentor/mentee group events and recognition events.

Eligibility

To be a Say Yes Buffalo Scholar Mentor you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Possess a Professional Certification, Associate’s Degree or higher level of education
  • Reside in the Western New York area

Qualities that we look for in our mentors include:

  • Good listening skills
  • Demonstrate patience and flexibility
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to the mentoring initiative (e.g., be dependable and consistently meet time commitments)
  • Be open to cultural differences
  • Display the ability to be encouraging and supportive
  • Adhere to all program policies and procedures
  • Be open to feedback

Application Process

If you are interested in sharing your professional expertise and time with one of our young people you can expect our application process will require you to do the following:

  • Complete the online application and screening process including an interview with Say Yes Buffalo
  • Complete and pass various background checks
  • Provide a copy of a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance
