Overview of SUNY/CUNY and Private College Scholarships

Say Yes Buffalo provides scholarships to eligible graduates of Buffalo public and charter schools to all State University of New York (SUNY) and City University of New York (CUNY) schools and more than 90 private colleges and universities.

See below to learn more about the different types of scholarships that are available.

Please note, Say Yes Buffalo does not provide scholarships for classes taken during winter or summer semesters; we provide scholarships to cover classes during the fall and spring semesters only.

SUNY/CUNY Tuition Scholarships

Say Yes eligible students who are accepted to colleges and universities in the SUNY/CUNY system can receive Tuition Scholarships.  The amount of these scholarships is determined by:

  1. How long the student has been continuously enrolled at a Buffalo public or charter school
  2. The tuition balance that remains AFTER state, federal and tuition specific institutional aid are subtracted

Family income is not a factor in determining the amount of Say Yes SUNY/CUNY Tuition Scholarships.

SUNY/CUNY Opportunity Grants

Opportunity Grants provide up to $2,000 per year and can be used toward books, fees, or room and board. These grants are awarded to Say Yes Buffalo eligible students who enroll at a SUNY or CUNY college or university and who:

  1. Receive the maximum Federal Pell Grant
  2. Reside on campus

Opportunity Grants when combined with other aid cannot exceed the cost of attendance.

Private College Tuition Scholarships

Say Yes eligible students who are accepted to private colleges and universities that are members of the Say Yes Buffalo Higher Education Compact AND who meet family income restrictions set by those institutions can receive Tuition Scholarships and more from those institutions (some institutions will cover more than just tuition costs, for example, room and board, and/or books).  Students with annual family income of $75,000 or less are eligible for these scholarships.  At some private institutions, students with family income over $75,000 are eligible.

The amount of these scholarships is determined by the tuition balance that remains AFTER state, federal and institutional aid are subtracted.

If your college is participating in New York State’s Enhanced Tuition Award (ETA), we strongly encourage you to apply for that program.

Private College Choice Grants

Say Yes eligible students who are accepted to private colleges and universities that are members of the Say Yes Buffalo Higher Education Compact and who have family incomes OVER $75,000 may be eligible to receive a Say Yes Choice Grant.

The Choice Grant provides up to $5,000 per year toward tuition costs that remain AFTER state, federal and institutional aid are subtracted. Choice Grants, when combined with state, federal, and institutional grants and scholarships, are not to exceed the cost of full-time undergraduate tuition.
