As a result of a gift from a generous donor, Say Yes to Education National will be making available a limited number of scholarships to eligible Say Yes Scholars admitted to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) – beginning with students matriculating in Fall 2018.
Q1: Who is eligible to apply for a Say Yes Scholarship to an HBCU?
A: High school seniors in Say Yes partner communities who meet the locally- established eligibility criteria for a Say Yes Scholarship, and who have applied to an HBCU, beginning with students matriculating to college in Fall 2018.
Q2: How much is the scholarship and what does it cover?
A: Those awarded Say Yes National Scholarships to an HBCU will receive a scholarship of up to $10,000 per year, for up to five years, to attend the HBCU of their choice, public or private, if admitted through the institution’s admissions process. Scholarships may be used to cover cost of attendance beyond tuition, except at HBCUs in Say Yes’s Higher Education Compact (see Q5 below).
Q3: How are recipients selected?
A: A limited number of such scholarships will be made available within each Say Yes chapter. Recipients will be chosen by a selection committee that will include representatives from the local Say Yes chapter, as well as Say Yes National.
Q4: How do students apply, and what is the deadline for doing so?
A: Applications are due no later than Feb. 15, 2018, and recipients will be notified no later than April 2, 2018. To apply, students must do so through Say Yes’ eScholarship portal. Once logged in, they should:
- Select “HBCU school” in school selection pull-down menu
- Add the name(s) of the HBCU(s) to which they are applying in the comment section
